Floor Locks VS Brake Casters

Looking for another way to keep your equipment from moving? Floor locks are an alternative to brakes, holding your equipment in place instead of holding the wheel of the caster in place like a brake.

Floor Lock Benefits

Floor locks can lock your equipment in place from a single point instead of at each caster, making it more convenient to lock in one step rather than braking each caster. It can be especially useful when you have equipment against a wall, or where one or more casters are inaccessible.

Floor locks don't swivel, making your equipment even more secure - they won't let swivel casters move from side to side.

Floor locks tend to be more effective than caster brakes at working with weight bearing down on them, and allow you to unlock and move your equipment at a moment's notice.

Floor Lock Limitations and Considerations

Floor locks are separate from casters and need allocated space for them to be attached. Depending on where casters are attached and the equipment is placed, caster brakes may work better.

Floor locks' extended heights must match the overall height of the casters. For example, if you have casters with an overall height of 4-1/2" must have a floor lock height 4-1/2". Similarly, the lock must be mounted at the same height as the casters. It needs to make contact with the floor but not be lifting the load of the equipment. Floor locks are NOT designed for lifting equipment, they are designed to apply pressure to the floor to prevent movement.

Floor locks cannot be used on a tilt cart.

Consider the placement of the floor lock - if mounted too close to the edge, the pedal can stick out and get in the way depending on your situation.
