High Temperature Casters

High temperature environments are among the toughest environments that casters will enter. Most materials included in casters would melt or take damage at high heat, so it limits what kinds of casters you can use.

High temp casters can be narrowed down into three main types:

  1. Floor protective
  2. Non-Marking
  3. Steel

Floor Protective

Materials that are suitable for high temperatures tend to be rougher on floors, but some floor protective casters are rated for high temperatures.

High temp rubber casters can take temperatures from 300°F to 525°F (while regular rubber is rated only to 180°F). Rubber casters aren't known for their high carrying capacity, but they do well on both smooth and rough floors, and provide a soft and cushioned ride without floor damage.

Non-Marking

There are a few different wheel materials you can go with if you want non-marking wheels, but don't need them to be fully floor safe. You can go with high temp nylons, phenolics, epoxies, or a few other proprietary compounds.

These hard wheels are great on smooth surfaces and in wet environments, and can handle temperatures up to 550° F. They will however wear down in size over time, and may rust over time.

Non-marking wheels' capacities generally peak around 3000 lbs per caster, depending on width and diameter. If you need more capacity, you can go with a steel wheel instead.

Steel

Steel-wheeled casters make for the most resilient high temp casters. They hold more weight than other casters of the same size, and are extremely durable against wear and tear. This toughness does mean that they are the most rough on floor, causing damage with extended use.

There are 3 major types of steel casters:

  1. Cast iron - industry standard, cost effective. Handles up to 600° F
  2. Ductile steel - higher capacity than cast iron. Handles up to 800° F
  3. Forged steel - higher capacity than ductile steel. Handles up to 1300° F

Final Thoughts

High temperatures can wreak havoc on a normal caster, so environments with high temperatures can need specialty casters. To get such hardy casters, you may have to make trade-offs with capacity, floor safety, or price.
