How to measure your stem?
Below are a few different ways to ensure you get the rights stem caster and avoid wasting time and money.
Best Method: Thread Checker
For the most accurate results, use a thread checker, which allows you to thread the stem into one of several reference nuts, confirming both stem diameter and thread pitch. If your caster is secured with a nut, you will also be able to thread that nut onto the threaded posts to verify those measurements.
As an additional check, the caster's threads can be compared against the threaded posts. When the diameter and thread pitch are correct, the threads will perfectly align with no visible gaps between them.
Note:Some thread checkers do not include a built-in ruler for measuring stem length. However, theyexcel at identifying the correct thread diameter and pitch, which are the most commonly misidentified measurements.
Good Method: Bolt Gauge
A bolt gauge gives youeverything you need in one compact tool. Simply insert the stem into the differently-sized holes until you find the correct diameter. The back includes thread indentations that let you compare the stem's threads to determine thread pitch. An integrated ruler makes it easy to measure the stem length.
Note:Bolt gaugesonly allow you to compare thread sizes rather than fully thread the stem into the gauge. They cannot provide the same level of confidence as threading the stem into a matching nut.
Okay Method: Ruler / Calipers
Measuring a threaded stem with only a ruler or calipers is by far the most difficult method and should only be used as a last resort. At the very least, use calipers for the most accurate measurements possible.
Measuring the stem length is straightforward, but determining the diameter requires that you measure the diameter from the outside of the threads.
Finally, thread pitch will be the most difficult measurement to determine:
For imperial sizes, measure at the peak of a thread and physically count the number of threads within an inch. This count from peak to peak is your thread pitch. For example, if there are 10 peaks inside an inch, that stem has a pitch of 10.
For metric sizes, measure the distance between the first peak and the peak ten threads down. Divide that measurement by 9 to get the thread pitch. For example, if the distance across 10 peaks is 11.25 mm, dividing by 9 gives a thread pitch of 1.25 mm.

Below are a few tips and tricks for measuring and installing your threaded stem casters:
When properly installed, the threaded stem should NOT be visible between the mounting surface and the caster's swivel section. The stem is designed only to secure the caster to the item, not adjust its height or make it level, because this puts more strain on the comparatively thin stem. Determine whether the specific stem length is important for your application. In many cases, a shorter stem can be used as long as there is enough thread engagement. Similarly, a longer stem can be used if there is enough room for the stem to be fully sunk into the object with no exposed stem.
If you need a custom stem length, most stems can be cut to size. Mapp Caster offers this service for an additional charge, or you can do it yourself. For DIY cutting, we recommend threading a nut onto the stem before cutting, then back it off afterward to help restore any threads that were damaged during the cutting process.
If your imperial-size stem is smaller than an inch, count the number of threads in half an inch and multiply by 2 to get the thread pitch.
If your caster is being directly installed into your equipment(without a nut),then thread pitch is absolutely crucial to get correctly, or else attempting to install can damage the threads in the equipment.
If you get the thread pitch wrong,purchasing a replacement nut will be easier than returning your casters, if this option is available.
Final thoughts
Threaded stem casters are often harder to replace, because the stem diameter and thread pitch are more difficult to understand and measure using only the tools you have on hand.
