Phenolic Caster Wheels

June 14, 2022

Phenolic Caster Wheels

Phenolic is a hard resin material that shares similar characteristics to plastic. Often times, phenolic is a substitute for plastic when plastic wheels aren't enough for the job.

Phenolic caster wheels are economically priced and offer great durability, resilience, and more. Below are the main highlights to why this wheel might be a good fit for you and your applications.

Wheel Characteristics

Phenolic resin wheels are resistant to oils, greases and solvents, but aren't recommended for constantly wet environments. The wheels will absorb water over time and fall apart, making a plastic wheel a more effective choice in a wet environment. Phenolic wheels can go through water intermittently, making them a popular choice for outdoor applications for an economic price.

The wheels can also withstand high impact and do not develop flat spots in the tread if it's sitting for long periods of time bearing weight, unlike many rubbers.

Phenolic is a great choice for custom BBQ pits and tool boxes. Unlike plastic, this wheel is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 250° F.

Capacity

Phenolic caster wheels tend to be on the higher end of capacities, comparable to steel and some polyurethane wheels. Phenolic wheels are often compared to plastic wheels due their similar qualities, but phenolic in some cases can carry twice the capacity for only slightly higher cost.

How Well Do Phenolic Casters Roll?

Phenolic wheels roll well on smooth surfaces. Since phenolic resin is hard, they have no give in the tread and require more effort to roll over rough surfaces. As a general rule, a larger diameter wheel will assist rolling over rough surfaces regardless of the composition.

We don't recommend phenolic wheels for floors that need protection like tile or hardwood. While phenolic wheels are non-marking, the dirt and debris under its hard tread may be dragged leaving scratch marks. We always recommend thermoplastic rubber or polyurethane for those who are conscious of their floors.

Applications

Below are just a few commonly recommended applications that are great with phenolic wheels:

  • Automotive
  • BBQ Pits
  • Dumpsters
  • Shelves
  • Toolboxes
  • Warehouses
  • Welders
  • Work Benches

Final Thoughts

Phenolic is really the next up from plastic wheels. They have similar characteristics, but offer more capacity at the cost of a few dollars more.
