Toolbox, Job Box, and Gangbox Casters

April 30, 2020

Toolbox, Job Box, and Gangbox Casters

Your toolbox can be very crucial to you. It houses the tools that make repairs and maintain items in our daily lives. For some of us, our toolbox is the very thing that puts food on the table.

Whether you're making your toolbox, job box, or gangbox mobile, here's a few things to keep in mind.

What kind of floor will it be rolling on? How often is it going to move?

If you plan on moving the toolbox often to different locations, polyurethane casters give some cushion to roll over bumps and cracks without causing floor damage, great for many situations and floors.

Phenolic and polyolefin wheel excel on smooth surfaces, but struggle rolling over bumps and cracks. Steel does similarly, but damages floors with extended use.

Depending on how much your toolbox travels, your caster selection may not matter as much.

Consider your environment

Phenolic and polyolefin casters are ideal for shops because they are resistant to oil, chemicals, and more.

Polyurethane is not recommended in environments that are often wet or in direct sunlight.

Steel casters are not ideal for constantly wet floors or floors that need protection.

How much capacity do you need?

Needing a high capacity can limit your caster choices. Keep in mind that caster capacity is multiplied by how many casters the weight is evenly distributed to.

Softer wheels often have lower capacities, while harder wheels usually have higher capacities.

Consider overall height

Adding casters to the bottom of a job box will increase the total height. If you have height restrictions, double check how tall the casters can be, and get something that is less than this height.

Keep in mind that casters with larger wheel diameters roll easier than smaller or low-profile casters.
