Hub Length: Ensuring the Right Fitment

When buying a replacement caster or industrial wheel, a few key measurements are often overlooked. One of the more often ignored is hub length.

By knowing what hub length is and how to measure it correctly, you can save time and money in the long run.

What is Hub Length?

The hub of a wheel is the center of the wheel, where it makes contact with and rotates on the axle. Thus, the hub length is the width of that section of the wheel. We can also call it the distance that the axle travels through the wheel.

Depending on the rig and wheel, a the hub can be too short or too long, causing fitment issues. If the hub is too short, washers can be added to fill the gap, but a too-long hub is harder to fix. A longer hub on a caster wheel may prevent the wheel from fitting between the forks of the rig, and in cases like on hand trucks can leave too little room for hardware to secure the wheel properly.

Centered versus Offset

There are two basic types of hubs: centered and offset.

A centered hub has an equal amount of hub on either side of the wheel. This is more common in caster wheels, and any other wheels that fit between a bracket.

An offset hub has more hub on one side than the other. This is more common on side-mounted wheels. Some hubs are even recessed into the wheel, which pushes the wheel further outward when mounted.
